Casio loopy gameplay9/20/2023 ![]() “Barbie Fashion Designer” was a game that focused on dressing up Barbie in outfits crafted by the user and then allowed a user to print their designs so that they could be worn by their Barbies at home. “Barbie Fashion Designer” was a computer game that not only allowed for girls to familiarize themselves with the computer, but it also allowed self-expression and provided girls the ability to make their creations become real life. Mattel Media believed it could do the same for girls, which is how “Barbie Fashion Designer” came into existence. ![]() They believed only boys were interested in technology and thus wanted to provide them with the space to develop skills that would benefit them once they hit the workforce. With the realization that game developers were catering to their male audiences and disregarding female interest in the tech world, Mattel Media stepped in and made a name for itself in 1996 with the development of “Barbie Fashion Designer.” Before “Barbie Fashion Designer,” gaming and computer companies failed to recognize girls as target audiences because they believed girls were less likely to own gaming consoles/computers and were uninterested in technology (Rosenberg, 2015). It could be argued that gameplayers are constructed as male.” If that statement is correct (and we can see that it is, with the existence of “Grand Theft Auto,” “Super Mario,” “Donkey Kong,” “Zelda,” etc.), then where was the space for female gamers to thrive in a gaming world of their own that reflected their interests and lives?
